art and Entertainment

Our focus centers around how the art and entertainment industries are using digital and immersive art experiences to transform entertainment for the public.  A new generation of artists are tapping into the power of technology to create a whole new class of artistic expression.  Additionally, classic artistic pieces are being experienced in an entirely new way with immersive displays, animations, and tailored environments.  We also focus on how technologies are shaping entertainment experiences in travel, leisure, and location-based activities enriched by technology, visualizations, data, and history.

Data Science in Art

Who ever said data science couldn’t be beautiful?  The arts are inventing new, innovative ways to experience and understand data, from unique infographics to entire immersive art experiences based on streams of data. Extracting knowledge and insights from data can be taught or experienced through compelling visualizations. We are visual beings and not only is information committed to memory with images, but can also often better understood through imagery rather than words.

Data, alone, can be turned into an artistic representation.  From digital screens to instruments that paint, all can be instructed to respond to data inputs.  Many might remember watching a sound wave frequency vibrate a steel plate with sand, resulting in a beautiful pattern.  Artists and entertainers are using data to create unique, computer generated, and responsive works that are transforming the concept of “performance art” in communities across the industry.

Immersive Experiences

Immersive art experiences are bringing the work of the masters into the modern era, creating powerful experiences that show art masterpieces in ways never imagined. Digital screens, projected environments animating a flat piece of art, multi-media layers, and engaging more senses such as sound and smell are just a few examples of the ways artists and entertainers are reinventing how patrons interact with their works.  Technology not only allows them to facilitate these environments, but it also enables rich and unique experience for each participant.

Games played on technologies like Xbox are not only providing entertainment, often they are providing players with a real-world, virtual representation of an actual destination.  Not only does the immersive experience make the environment recognizable, but they also feel like they have physically visited a location without doing so.  This type of experience, powerful enough in this one aspect, is often heightened by techniques learned through cognitive science and human-computer concepts. Immersive games often adapt to user interactions, making the experience individually unique

Augmented Travel and Leisure

The travel industry is always looking for ways to attract visitors to their destination, but a new movement is happening to solely draw visitors in with their eyes in augmented or virtual environments.  This allows travelers to experience a location without leaving their homes, as well as receive more education and information about their destination. Art is local.  Artists open their studios and workshops as a part of the process of appreciating and purchasing works of art.  More and more cities and counties are embracing their local art communities through art walks, tours, galleries, and shows.  Many are promoting their works to visitors by allowing them to see, experience, and learn more about them through location-centric technologies.
